Salt Lake City Church Shooting 2 dead multiple injured
SALT LAKE CITY — A night of mourning turned into a scene of further tragedy Wednesday evening as a shooting outside a funeral service left two people dead and six others injured.
The incident occurred at approximately 7:36 p.m. in the parking lot of a meetinghouse of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, located at 660 North Redwood Road. According to the Salt Lake City Police Department, people had gathered at the chapel for a memorial service when an altercation broke out in the parking lot, leading to gunfire.
The Aftermath
Salt Lake City police spokesperson Glen Mills confirmed that two individuals were killed in the exchange. Of the six others injured, three remain in critical condition at local hospitals. Authorities noted that some victims were transported to emergency rooms by private vehicles before first responders arrived on the scene.
"We extend prayers for all who have been impacted by this tragedy," a spokesperson for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints said in a statement. "We express deep concern that any sacred space intended for worship should be subjected to violence of any kind."
Investigation and Manhunt
A massive police presence, including 18 units from the Salt Lake City Police Department, swarmed the area following reports of shots fired. The FBI’s Salt Lake City field office and agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) are also assisting in the investigation.
As of late Wednesday night, the shooter or shooters remain at large. Police believe the suspects fled north on Redwood Road immediately following the incident. While a specific vehicle description has not yet been released, officers have been seen searching the corridor between Redwood Road and the Jordan River.
Traffic and Safety Alerts
Redwood Road remains closed to the public between 600 North and the surrounding blocks as investigators comb the parking lot for evidence. Transportation officials expect the road to remain closed until at least 1:00 a.m.
Police are urging the public to stay away from the area. Anyone with information regarding the shooting or the suspects' whereabouts is encouraged to contact the Salt Lake City Police Department at 801-799-3000.
