​A Historic Easter Gathering: The 196th Annual General Conference

The 196th Annual General Conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was a weekend of profound spiritual milestones. Coinciding with Easter Sunday, the conference served as a powerful, worldwide testament of renewal and resurrection.

​The timing of this solemn assembly aligning with Easter carries profound historical and spiritual weight. It mirrors the sacred Easter Sunday of April 3, 1836, when the Prophet Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery saw the resurrected Savior in the Kirtland Temple, followed by the restoration of priesthood keys by Moses, Elias, and Elijah. Experiencing the sustaining of a new prophet and the reorganization of the First Presidency on this same holiday beautifully connected the restoration of the past with the living revelation of the present.

In a striking and significant use of stage design, the floral arrangements and lighting were carefully positioned to depict a cross. As each speaker stood at the podium to deliver their address, they were visually enveloped within this cross a powerful, constant reminder that every message shared during the weekend was firmly centered in the Atoning sacrifice and Resurrection of Jesus Christ.

​Weaving through the organizational changes and the historic callings of new Apostles and General Officers was the unifying spirit of Easter weekend. This culminated powerfully in the Sunday afternoon session, where President Oaks concluded the 196th conference with a brief, profound 5-10 minute address.
​Focusing entirely on the Savior, the prophet highlighted the deep significance of this particular weekend how the rare alignment of a solemn assembly and General Conference with Easter Sunday served to powerfully anchor the Church in Christ.
