Severe Monsoon System Battered the Wasatch Front: Tornadoes, Hail, and Flooding Reported

Bountiful, UT — A powerful and chaotic monsoon weather system tore through the Wasatch Front today, bringing a barrage of severe weather that included a confirmed tornado, destructive hail, and widespread flash flooding from Salt Lake City up through Davis and Weber counties.

Residents are urged to remain on high alert, as meteorologists warn that this volatile monsoon pattern will continue generating severe threats until at least 4:00 AM tomorrow.

"Whisper Tornadoes" in Bountiful

Right here in our own backyard, residents on both the north and south sides of Bountiful reported seeing what many are calling "whisper tornadoes." These brief, rapidly swirling funnel clouds and gustnadoes kicked up debris and rattled neighborhoods as the storm fronts collided over the foothills. While these localized spin-ups lacked the sustained power of a traditional tornado, they brought sudden, intense wind shear that tore through tree branches and patio furniture.

Widespread Destruction Up North

The situation escalated dramatically just north of us. In Ogden, Layton, and Farmington, the storm unleashed its full fury.

A full, sustained tornado was reported touching down, carving a visible path through the heavy monsoon rain.

The torrential downpours were accompanied by punishing, golf-ball-sized hail that shattered windshields, dented vehicles, and stripped foliage from trees across Davis and Weber counties.

Simultaneously, the sheer volume of water overwhelmed local drainage infrastructure. Severe street flooding has stranded motorists in Ogden and Layton, transforming major intersections into rivers.

Ongoing Threat: Shelter in Place

The danger has not yet passed. The current monsoon trough remains stalled over northern Utah, pulling in deep moisture and atmospheric instability. Emergency management officials are advising all residents from Salt Lake City through Ogden to prepare for additional waves of severe weather overnight.

What to expect until 4:00 AM:

• Flash Flooding: Do not attempt to drive through flooded roadways. Turn around, don't drown.

• Severe Thunderstorms: Prepare for frequent cloud-to-ground lightning, torrential rain, and the potential for more large hail.

• Erratic Winds: Secure any remaining loose outdoor items, as sudden downdrafts and additional small spin-ups remain possible.
