Redhawks Rise Above Fatigue: Bountiful Stifles Wasatch in Semifinal Rematch

HEBER CITY — The Bountiful Redhawks continue to prove why the road to the 5A trophy runs through them. In a high-stakes rematch of last year’s state semifinal, the three-time defending champions overcame a slow start to dismantle Wasatch on their home court, 56-46. The victory pushes the Redhawks to a dominant 8-1 start for the 2025 season.

The contest was a testament to Bountiful’s conditioning and mental toughness. Playing their second game in less than 24 hours following a physical battle with Skyline, the Redhawks initially struggled with "bus legs." However, a quick 16-7 burst in the first quarter signaled that the defending champs had found their second wind. Coach Joel Burton’s squad displayed a championship-level "next man up" mentality that kept the Wasps on their heels all night.

Bountiful’s offensive efficiency was driven by an incredibly balanced attack, a nightmare scenario for opposing defenses. Four different Redhawks reached double digits, led by future Utah Ute Milika Satuala, who netted 15 points. The scoring distribution was a masterclass in team basketball: Maleah Nelson (12), Maile Murdock (11), and Brynna Castleton (10) combined to ensure the pressure never stayed on just one player.

The most encouraging takeaway for the Redhawks was the emergence of their bench and younger rotation players. Freshman sharp-shooter Maile Murdock was the spark plug in the first half, burying three critical 3-pointers to stretch the lead to 21-7. Coach Burton highlighted this development, noting that the growth of players like Murdock and Peyton Orchard is successfully lifting the heavy scoring burden off the veteran starting five.

Wasatch attempted to claw back in the second half, narrowing the gap to 38-31 by the end of the third. But the Redhawks responded like champions do—with a clinical 12-4 run to open the final period. A dagger three-pointer from Satuala pushed the lead to a game-high 15 points (50-35), effectively silencing the Heber City crowd and putting the game out of reach.

While a late fourth-quarter press by the Wasps forced a few uncharacteristic turnovers, Bountiful’s poise under pressure ensured the lead never truly evaporated. By winning the rebounding battle and finding scoring from every corner of the floor, the Redhawks sent a clear message to the rest of 5A: they aren't just defending their title; they are evolving to win another one.
